Conversion Guide

Why should I convert

Step 1 - you may already own a FFV!  Determine if your vehicle was released from the manufacturer as a Flex-Fuel Vehicle.

Step 2 - find out if your vehicle is compatible.

Step 3 - find out which Flex-Fuel Conversion unit and injector adapters you need.

Step 4 - important information to consider prior to installation.

Step 5 - view and print out the installation instructions and watch the installation video.

We have tried to keep this as simple as possible. If you require any assistance, please contact us.

Step 1: determine if you already own an e85 flex fuel vehicle

nevc The National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition has put together information on how to determine if you already own a FFV. Just follow this link.

Step 2: is your vehicle compatible?

compatible with multi-port and sequential fuel injection systems.

If you have a 4, 6 or 8 cylinder multi-port & sequential fuel injection system you can place your orders online.

For customers with throttle bodies, boxer/pancake engines, or 5, 10 and 12 Cylinder Vehicles, we do have units available. They are currently being handled as special orders.  Inquiries can be made via email or by calling us at 888-901-Fuel.

Step 3: which Flex-Fuel Conversion unit do I need?

determine what type of fuel injectors are on your vehicle

There are several different types of fuel injectors in use today and there is a specific Flex-Fuel Conversion Unit wiring harness for each type of injector.

There are several ways to determine what type of fuel injectors are on your vehicle:
1) Check this Adapter Connector List.
2) Check with the Manufacturer.
3) Go to Napa Online and do an online search on your vehicles' fuel injector and compare it to the pictures below. (printer view and print instructions)
4) Disconnect the wiring harness on your vehicle from a single fuel injector and compare it to these pictures.

INSTRUCTIONS: Start by looking for the mechanism that will release the lock. It will be on the sides or on the front of the injector connector (some connectors may have a metal clip), push this clip and it should release the connector.

NOTE: There are different styles of connectors located on the fuel injectors of vehicles. These may vary in appearance from our photos. If you are experiencing any difficulty verifying your connector type, please email us buddy@greenfuelnow.com.

Step 4: preparing for installation

A few things to consider before getting started:

Low Impedance Info

Prior to Installation, the resistance of an injector must be checked.  The ohms must read at least 10ohms.  Anything below that may cause problems.

Polarity Inverter Kit info

There are a few models of cars that leave the factory with the polarity of the connector terminal injection plug reversed. Before installation, the terminals polarity can be verified using a test light. If your polarity is inverted, you will need a Reverse Polarity Harness.

lubrilon Engine Protection Kit

ENGINE PROTECTION MUST BE ADDED TO CLEAN CRANKCASE OIL AND DRIVEN WITH 2 TANKS FULL OF GASOLINE BEFORE RUNNING VEHICLE ON ETHANOL.

Protects against the acids produced by E85 fuel!  Treat your Vehicle with this proprietary formula before changing over to E85. Improves horsepower and engine performance, Reduces emissions, fuel and oil consumption, Cleans the fuel delivery system. (Included with the purchase of each kit)

Fuel Injectors / Spark Plugs

It is not necessary to change the original injectors or spark plugs prior to installation.  We recommend that you have them checked to ensure that they are in proper working order.

Fuel Filter

It is not necessary to change the original filter for installation.
However, alcohol has a tendency to clean the impurities from the fuel tank and these impurities become trapped in the fuel filter. We suggest replacing your fuel filter 30-60 days after changing from gasoline to E85.

Fuel Pump

Some fuel pumps on the market are more resistant to ethanol usage than others.  We recommend having a qualified professional determine if your fuel pump should be replaced with one that's more compatible with alcohol.

O2 Sensors

O2 Sensors should be in proper operating condition oscillating between 50 and 950 mill volts.

Step 5: How to install

THOROUGHLY READ ALL INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE INSTALLING AND/OR USING THIS PRODUCT. IMPROPER INSTALLATION AND/OR USE MAY DAMAGE THE PRODUCT, HARM YOUR VEHICLE, OR CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN – SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
• Use caution when mounting the Flex-Fuel Conversion Kit. Remember there are many electrical wires, gas lines, vacuum lines, brake lines, as well as a gas tank in the automobile. Make sure you know where they are when mounting the Flex-Fuel Conversion Kit to avoid puncturing lines, shorting wires or drilling holes in the gas tank.
• To avoid damage to the Flex-Fuel Conversion Kit, mount the unit and run all wires away from heat sources such as the exhaust manifold.
• Avoid sharp edges when running wires.
• Always use a grommet to protect wires running through the firewall.
• NEVER PRESSURE WASH THE FLEX-FUEL CONVERSION KIT
• ENGINE PROTECTION MUST BE ADDED TO CLEAN CRANKCASE OIL AND VEHICLE DRIVEN FOR AT LEAST 2 TANKS FULL OF GASOLINE BEFORE RUNNING VEHICLE ON ETHANOL.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
1. Add Engine Protection Chemicals: Change vehicle oil and filter. Add the 12 ounce bottle of Permanent Engine Protection included with the Kit to the engine oil being careful not to overfill the crankcase. Add the Upper Cylinder Gas Treatment to a full tank of gasoline.

2. Do not use E85 until you have driven the vehicle for 2 tanks full of gasoline after adding the engine protection chemicals.

3. After driving the vehicle on 2 tanks full of gasoline, you may start filling up with E85 fuel.

4. Locate Mounting Position: Locate an area in the engine compartment of the vehicle to mount the Flex-Fuel Conversion Kit. The location you have selected must meet the following requirements in order for the Unit to be properly installed:

a. Location must allow the female connector end of each injector lead to reach each corresponding fuel injector.

b. It must be mounted to a solid mounting surface. Examples of solid mounting surfaces are the firewall and the inner fender well.

c. The Unit and all wires must be kept away from heat sources such as exhaust manifolds.

d. The Unit and wires must not interfere with any control linkages or cables.

5. Mount Unit: Drill holes in mounting surface as necessary and Secure the unit to mounting surface using 2 self tapping screws. DO NOT DEFORM OR DRILL ANY ADDITIONAL HOLES INTO THE UNIT. Always mount unit through factory mounting holes.

6. Secure Ground Wire: The single black wire with the round terminal end is the negative ground wire. It must be connected directly to the vehicle chassis. We do not recommend extending the ground wire in any installation.

a. The ground point in the vehicle should be a piece of chassis metal that is part of or welded to the main body of the vehicle. Painted surfaces should be scraped or sanded clean to expose the bare metal before the ground lug is bolted down. (To prevent rust cover the bare metal area with paint or grease AFTER you finish mounting the ground wire.)

7. Connect Injector Leads: Disconnect the vehicle’s factory wiring harness from each fuel injector being very careful to not damage the wiring harness, clips or electrical connections. Then route one injector lead to each fuel injector, being careful to keep wires away from heat sources, control linkages and cables. Plug the female end of each injector lead onto a fuel injector, and the male end of each injector lead onto the corresponding female plug on the factory wiring harness.
