Flex Fuel Retro Fitters,
BY BEN MCKEE
EUGENE, Ore. -- Old fashioned gasoline, for most people, isn't on the way out anytime soon. But as gas prices go up, drivers are adding all sorts of different fuels to the fire. Even corn-stock!
Let's say you have a gas-powered car, but you want to start "fillin' 'er up" with something else. Ethanol, made from corn-stock, is a popular choic. Problem is, you can't just pump your traditional gas tank with something else right away.
You need a flex-fuel converter for your car. It gives you a choice between filling up with gas or ethanol depending on what's available. A small handful of new cars have the flex-fuel converter built-in, but most cars need a retro-fit.
At Trackside Auto Repair in Eugene, mechanics can fit just about any car with a "FlexTek or DigiFlex" converter. After equipment and labor, the retro-fit will cost you between $700 and $1200. But if you're looking to kick the gas habit, and help the environment? The mechanics at Trackside say, it's worth every penny.
Most gas-powered cars can run on gasoline that has up to ten-percent Ethanol in the mix. That's called E-10. But if you want to fill it with fuel that has higher amounts of ethanol, you'll need a flex-fuel converter.
